SwissRe
Assessing risk and managing desaster
Foolproof · 2016-2017 · UX, UI Design

Let's go beyond the business of insurance
and help assess and manage risks before they become acute

Brief

Design solutions for all of SwissRe’s clients to effectively manage their policies, and claims by combining all of the company’s capabilities into one seamless experience.

Role

As the Lead Designer for the second phase of the project, I picked up from the development of a visual language, gathered further requirements, and developed advanced functionality through to the first release of the product and beyond.

Outcome

Corporate Solutions is Swiss Re's core direct insurance business. This portal allows customers to manage property and casualty insurance policies across large international programmes, and allows clients to upload any supporting evidence they need to make a claim. It was also connected to the company’s risk prediction software and combines relevant information into a single experience, allowing clients to take preventative measures to limit the impacts of natural disasters. This tool has been made life to all of SwissRe’s customers.

Breaking down complexity
Understanding user roles

Policy management exists in a complex system of different stakeholders dispersed geographically and organisationally. Taking over the foundations of the new portal - a basic architecture and a visual pattern library - I went back to the basics, trying to understand the different user roles and prioritising user journeys for each of them. The core of this activity were stakeholder interviews which I distilled into personas, which were iterated on multiple times over.

Establishing the basics
Agile development of policy management

Discovery led to a range of conceptual flows which were fed back on by subject matter experts in numerous sprint cycles. The project was run as an Agile process. I was actively involved in planning sprints, reviewing requirements and managing a backlog of user stories.

Beyond MVP
Connecting the dots

After the successful launch of a policy management portal, I developed a new range of feature sets and integrations with other tools, allowing customers to assess, manage, and respond to risks to their assets more effectively. This included file management systems and GIS data mapping within a single environment.
